I love the sunny little suite I rent here in Lethbridge. I’m pretty fortunate to have great landlords who send their friends to me for graphic design, too. Their pal Ryan was looking to have a logo built for his new company, Complete Kitchen Renovations. He has been operating as a contractor under his own name for years, but felt it was time to brand himself.

After sitting down for coffee and getting an idea of what Ryan was looking for I started sketching and designing. (An industry that’s very close to my heart, this one). Ryan loved the work I did for Kitchenhaus (graphic archive) and was hoping to do something similar in colour and style. Although we went through over a dozen options—the one that stood out was the most modern, slick, clean and simple. I tried to pull in what we loved most about the Kitchenhaus design, and voila. Since printing, he’s received some great compliments on the cards and logo. The most common feedback is “they stand out because they’re simple”. I love it.

I thought I’d share some images of the printed cards and the logo here on the blog. I also did a social icon and short-form logo in addition to the full version.

I recently had the opportunity to design a logo, business cards and spruce up a yola-site for my good friend Rachel, who recently put a name to her contracting business RAM Communications. Rachel is the VP of Business Development at thirdstream (where I spend my days as Art Director), working remotely and traveling across Canada to chat with CUs. Needless to say between BD, contracting, kids, volleyball and a wonderful husband, she keeps pretty busy (but not out of trouble *wink*).

Rachel is a bit of a dream to design for. Basically, she knows what she likes, and makes solid decisions quickly *swoon*. She let me know what she was after, I sketched and put together a series of digital roughs, and she selected what she liked from that first draft.

I played with the idea of ram-horns in a few of my sketches, and this icon really stuck. Rach loves red, which I appreciate. We started with a logo, then moved to business cards and a “sprucing” of the microsite she built on Yola for her business. I registered the domain ramc.ca, and it should soon be pointing to this yolasite.

If you’d like to connect with Rachel, feel free to email her or follow her on twitter.

In 2011 I didn’t take out my Canon much for personal photos. For some reason, I simply didn’t bring it along and mostly snapped images on my iPhone, if I took any at all. The last time I had it on my hip was when I attended a Kite Festival over the summer. Something I never had imagined I’d be doing, truly. I have to say, the whole thing was like being in a dream. I don’t exaggerate saying there were times during the day I wasn’t entirely sure I wasn’t in a deep rem-sleep. The sky was incredible—bright and clear, then fierce, then fresh and chilly. They pipe ambient instrumental music into the field from a series of circus-tents, and you watch hundreds of kites float and spin in the sky. It was actually a great, relaxing way to spend a day. I would recommend anyone check it out. It’s inspiring, totally different and incredibly PG. I found myself thinking about this festival tonight, and I thought I’d share a few snaps from that day here on the blog before heading to sleep.

Today, Nancy tied the knot. Appropriate I thought to add this invitation to the blog. I put it together for the host of Nancy’s shower, Shalon (who you may remember was married last year). We wanted to do something that made it simple for guests to RSVP and find their way to the location easily from their smartphone, tablet or computer. It made sense to keep it simple—secure a url, put up a single web-page with all the information and send it to guests. It’s slightly more personal than bulk-e-invitation sites, and could be styled to suit the theme of the coming wedding.

Shalon was thrilled with the result and from what I hear, the Bridal Shower was lovely. Congrats Nancy.

In January I had a rare opportunity to attend a Masque. When my date asked me what I thought we should wear I said, “I guess I could make us a couple masks?” and he was thrilled. A trip to Michael’s for supplies and I was set up. This was a lot of fun—I’ve never painted masks, although I’ve thought of it. I’ve been known to gawk at the collection of gorgeous Venetian Masks at the Costume Shoppe in Calgary. I always thought it might be a neat idea for a themed wedding or an over-the-top pinup photo-shoot. Either way, I’m glad I finally had a reason to get out the glue gun and get fancy. Not that it’s of any real consequence, but after scouring Netflix for background inspiration, I half-watched Ever After (Drew Barrymore) followed by Groundhog Day while painting and gluing these beauties. However the inspiration came, the results were colorful and covered things in sparkles I’m sure I’ll never see the end of in my suite. They were a hit.

He was in a jam, and needed a speedy graphic for his team—the “Krazy Kanucks”—for the Phoenix 12 Hours of Fury race. I managed to source a vector from iStock that I could easily change up to match his sketch. A few emails back and forth and voila—Brian was ready to race with some custom jerseys, courtesy of ATAC. Once he was home, he sent me photos from the event and a graphic from the jersey designer. I wanted to share these here on the blog. Enjoy.

When I look back on 2011 years from now, I think I’ll still be overwhelmed with the strong sense of gratitude I feel today. There has been challenge, radical change, emotional intensity, serendipity, desperate confusion and fear, genuine joy and great love. This gamut was especially pronounced in the past 12 months.

I think it was probably some time in March when I started to quietly put on the brakes, responding carefully to emails and ignoring my facebook account. I went about my day-to-day, one foot in front of the other. Life events and new realities had rocked me. In many ways, I was just completely at sea.

By somewhat random chance I met an interesting and insightful woman during this time who (for some reason) suggested I start painting again. Here’s my history with the paintbrush: Love it, but rarely do it. Painted in Junior High & High School and have pulled out the brushes for crafting and the occasional canvas, since. Often expensive and hard to justify, it falls off the to-do list and gets forgotten. Tried pin-striping (with a big thanks to Butcher), which also managed to fall off the list of free-time fillers. For some reason though, when it was suggested this time, it stuck with me.

I saw a Michael’s flyer advertising 50% off all Artist’s Loft products, and decided it was too good to pass up. I went and stocked up, came home and dug out the easel, threw on some music and started making a mess.

Here’s what I’ve been loving about painting: the total chaos of it. As a designer, there are times I’m staring at a file at 6400% zoom, moving something by two pixels. It’s obvious I enjoy graphic design—however it can be technical in nature, regardless of how obscure the layout. There is just something deeply liberating about making a mess with random glops and swishes of colour and not getting caught up in the potential results. I have no aspirations for photo-realism when I’m painting. I’m not looking to create perfect works of art. And so far, when I start opening the tubes of acrylic, I have only a very loose idea of what I’m about to put on the canvas. I just start putting down colour, and let go. You see where I’m going with this. That’s right: painting has been a great way to relax & be mindful. To welcome inspiration and give up control. It’s meditative. Even though the results have been varied—and it’s been one small activity of many—taking time to make a vibrant, silly mess on canvas has been healing for me these many months.

It’s because of the encouragement of someone dear to me that I’m posting these images here on my blog, and may keep doing so. Putting these out there is what I would imagine streaking through a church during mass is like. I hadn’t painted them thinking anyone would ever see them, exactly. So here I am, nakedly showing you a corner of my heart from 2011.

I am sincerely grateful for the support of my family, friends and clients this year. There are some great things on the horizon, and I’m looking forward to them with a fresh perspective and enthusiasm.

Over the summer two wonderful people tied the knot: Isaac & Monique. They are film and music enthusiasts to the core, and had some fantastic ideas for their wedding invites and reception ‘guestbook’. When Isaac suggested a postcard styled after the Punch Drunk Love poster as an invite, I immediately loved the idea. I hadn’t done a ‘homage’ piece since I was in school at SAIT. They had their wedding photographer shoot a few images of them with the poster as inspiration. I manipulated the colour of the photograph they liked, re-created the colour ribbons and sourced a typeface that was a close match to the original.

In addition the these postcards, Isaac had a vision for their ‘guestbook’. Something that’s become popular is a photo framed of the couple with an oversized matte for guests to sign on their way into the reception. To make this idea a bit more personal, Isaac thrifted some records that had never been played (Michael Bolton was my personal favorite) and asked if I could do some custom labels for them. At his request, I found high-res images of the Sun, Verve, Apple and Atlantic record labels (from specific years) and manipulated them to include song titles that were unique to the couple. I wound up printing these on Avery sticker-paper, cutting, lining up and sticking them to each record. The results were better than expected—some guests even asked if they were real, until they read the song titles. After the wedding, family of the couple had them framed, and now all four hang in their condo.

All in all, this project was really fun to work on. Dream clients who were enthusiastic and had some really unique ideas (not to mention a beautiful wedding!) Congratulations Isaac & Monique.

My sis-from-another-miss, Robin, is getting married this summer. She contacted me in the fall about the possibility of putting together the wedding invites for her big day. We got together, chatted about options, budget and design. She shared that her wedding colours were a deep purple, black, white and silver. She was looking for something traditional without being too frilly or flowery. We went back and forth emailing ideas and type choices, and landed on a personal type favorite by an illustrator/letterer I admire greatly: Buttermilk (by Jessica Hische).

I had a lot of fun doing this invite. Hours of bending bezier curves while grooving to Cat Power and Mumford & Sons proved to be pretty relaxing and therapeutic. Robin opted for a digital print, and Warwick did a great job for us. The silver foil-lined envelopes, sparkly star and white ribbon finished it off, all on budget.
